Our Philosophy

We are, first and foremost, a brand that deals with textiles.

Not a brand that happens to sell Japanese goods. We believe if we get the foundation right, everything built upon it follows naturally. The textile itself is the beginning. It is also the standard against which everything else is measured.

Honouring Craftsmanship

Behind every piece in our collection is a maker, a tradition, and a decision to do things properly.

Our upcycled Obis - the wide silk sashes once central to Japanese Kimono dress, are among the most remarkable textile achievements in the world. Woven with extraordinary precision and dyed in colours that have endured for generations, they represent a mastery that modern production rarely approaches.

Yet as traditions shift and living spaces change, these pieces risk fading quietly into obscurity. Folded away, unseen, unappreciated.

We don't think they deserve that.

At Tōya, we give these textiles a second life. Re-imagining them as objects that belong in the rhythms of contemporary living, where their beauty and quality can finally be seen and felt every day.

Made to Last, Made with Care

We live in an age of abundance, where almost anything can be acquired cheaply and quickly. But speed and price come at a cost: to the environment, to the craftspeople who dedicate lifetimes to their work, and to us, the people who live with the things we own.

Everything in our collection, whether upcycled or newly made is chosen because it is built to endure. Our towels, for instance, draw on hundreds of years of Japanese towel-making tradition. Free from unnecessary chemicals, gentle on the skin, and crafted to last years without losing their quality, they are the quiet opposite of throwaway.

What is kind to the environment is almost always kind to the person using it, and the most beautiful things are, more often than not, the most considered.

Rooted Here, Inspired There

While all our products originate in Japan, wherever possible, we work with British-based partners. Not only to reduce our environmental footprint, but because we believe in the value of investing in the communities around us.

We are more than a collection of goods. We are an invitation to own things differently.

The right textile, chosen well, needs nothing else to justify itself.
